He was announced as Croatia’s Eurovision 2017 act just 13 days ago, and now Jacques Houdek has officially revealed his song. Debuting on his YouTube Channel as a lyric video, “My Friend” is a stunning ballad that really shows Jacques Houdek’s technical vocal abilities.

Jacques Houdek was chosen through internal selection by Croatia to represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. He is a veteran of the previous national selections, having attempted to represent the country a total six times. People from the UK may recognise him from The X Factor, where he auditioned in 2011. He is also one of four coaches on the Croatian version of The Voice.

“My Friend” has been teased for a few days, with a snippet of the song, then the release of an instrumental version, as well as a social media campaign. Now it’s finally here.

The song is definitely a daring song that totally fits in with the theme of Eurovision this year, which is Celebrate Diversity. The song is split into two parts, many fans have stated that it’s like two different singers collaborating; this truly shows the vocal skills of Jacques Houdek, and we’re totally interested in seeing how he will perform this song on the Eurovision stage.

The song is sort of a ballad, which is something we’re not short of this year; however, this pop-ballad is sung both in English and Italian. Parts of the song are a perfect pop-ballad, and others are an operatic ballad. The start is an uplifting dream-like half which then launches into a more vigorous second half. This is bound to do well compared to the other Eurovision 2017 songs; but can he win?

The Eurovision Song Contest 2017 is definitely going to be a competitive year. The semi-finals will take place on 9 May and 11 May, with the Grand Final taking place on 13 May 2017. Last year, Jamala won with “1944”, bringing the contest to her home country of Ukraine. It will be held at the International Exhibition Centre in Kyiv. Who will win? Time will tell.
