Owing to his father’s job, his family often moved places and he received his education in bases in Germany, Panama, and Washington, D.C.Growing up, Ron Rivera was inspired by Puerto Rican professional baseball player Roberto Clemente.During his time at the University of California, Berkeley, he received many awards and honors for his performance for his final season in 1983, including being named a consensus All-American, Pac-10 Football Defensive Player of the Year along with Arizona linebacker Ricky Hunley, the Pop Warner Trophy, and being named MVP of the East–West Shrine Game.Ron Rivera was inducted into the California Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994.His home in Charlotte, North Carolina caught fire on January 5, 2015. Although it was partially damaged, Rivera and his family were able to escape without any injury.He has a family history of cancer and was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in a lymph node of his neck in August 2020. He then underwent a seven-week treatment regimen that included 35 proton therapy appointments and three cycles of chemotherapy.
